Story
Not everyone who loves you is good for what you're building.
There are people who genuinely care about you and consistently pull you away from the thing you said mattered.
You don't have to cut them off. You do have to stop pretending the pattern isn't real.
The Code
Code 4 — Your Circle Matters Most
Code 4 of 7 · Business Brainwash
Your circle is a business input, not a social accident.
Find your tribe and your mentors. Engineer what you admire. Be in rooms that intimidate you.
- Find your tribe. Find your mentors.
- Remove the people who cost you focus.
- Be in rooms that intimidate you — that's the tuition.
Lessons
Four shifts that make this Code real.
Cost is not the same as blame
A relationship can be draining without anyone being a villain.
Describe the pattern, not the person's character.
Adjust the dose, not the door
Most relationships need boundaries, not endings.
Change frequency and context before you change status.
Say the season out loud
Silence reads as rejection.
Tell them what you're doing and for how long.
Watch the after-feeling
How you feel after time together is the data.
Track energy, not intention.
Data
Relationships sort by what they leave behind.
Illustrative operator view. Rating recent time together by energy afterward tends to be far more revealing than rating it by enjoyment during.
Illustrative framework — not measured performance.
Strategy
Change the dose before you change the relationship
Different setting, shorter window, different frequency. Most of the drain is situational, not personal.
And be honest that during a building season, some relationships will get less of you. That's a trade you should make consciously, not by accident.
The people decisions nobody trains you for.
Think about last month's time. Note who left you energized and who drained you. Adjust one dose this month.
